Personal introduction to Modern Times
"One of the most memorable moments of Modern times, it is the one where Charlot, to have screwed bolts all day long on a line of production, becomes crazy. He is free, usually. Neither husband, nor worker, nor follower of whatever it is, nor even engaged politically, his gestures are always new, comic answers to the adversity, or then they are "exuberant". But the interaction with the machine makes him to go off the rails, and then to be thrown in prison. In two short films, I filmed a (female) character riveted to the stream of the production line work. With sadness or without mercy, the machine alters the person, reduces her to this gesture - gesture she could be proud of, not to become crazy actually. Or indeed, she becomes a little bit crazy, and she can release herself from it. This is what I would like to speak to you about introducing this projection."
